Key Largo Skills Session: Buoyancy and Navigation Practice

Non-stop bites all day long! We started our June diving adventure at 8:00 am from Palisade, with partly cloudy skies setting up what turned out to be a solid day on the water. The crew was ready to get underwater and explore the Key Largo waters. We guided the group as part of Grand Mesa Anglers with our Scuba Diving Test package. Once the stage was set, we focused on buoyancy control, underwater navigation, and controlled ascents throughout the dive. The techniques worked well for the conditions we found. Grand Mesa Anglers runs these Scuba Diving Test trips with a maximum capacity of 4 divers, which keeps the group size manageable and lets everyone get the attention they need underwater. June is a great month for diving around Palisade because the water conditions in Key Largo tend to be more stable this time of year. One for the books today! We headed out from Magnolia St Fishing Dock this morning at 10:00 am for what turned into a perfect May snorkeling adventure. Clear conditions throughout the day made for ideal visibility as we explored the underwater world together. We met up bright and early at 8 and got you all set up with your gear. The skies were a bit on the cloudy side, but that didn't dampen our spirits one bit. As we headed out, I could tell you and your friend were pumped to get out there and explore the underwater world. And let me tell you, we found some good stuff! Our guided trip was quite the adventure we went to work searching the waters for unique aquatic amidst the coral reefs. We spotted several shark of varied species as well as a huge variey of coral fish. It didn't take long before we saw an impressive school of Yellowfin tuna! We didn't manage to see any other sharks, but we still had a blast out there, enjoying the clear water and everything the marine life had to offer.By the time we wrapped up, they both had huge smiles on your faces. What a day out on the flats near Islamorada! I had the pleasure of taking Gtest out for a Florida Keys Flats Fishing trip with Fly To Fish Guide Service, and I can say with certainty that we had a blast. The weather was with us - partly cloudy throughout the day, which is ideal for spotting fish in the shallows. The water conditions were great, crystal clear for stalking our target species. We started the day rigging up the 18' poling skiff, making sure Gtest's 8-weight fly rod was ready to go. It didn't take long before we started seeing some Permit tailing in the distance. I poled us into position and Gtest made a few careful casts, keeping the fly just out of their line of sight. On the third cast, one of the Permit turned and slammed the fly! Gtest set the hook and the fight was on - these fish really put up an incredible battle on the light tackle. After a few tense minutes, we were able to leader the Permit alongside the boat for a quick photo before releasing it unharmed. What made this trip so special was not just the quality of the fishing, but the whole experience. Sight-fishing the flats and backcountry is such a unique thrill, constantly on the lookout for those tailing fish. And Gtest was a natural - his double-haul casting was spot on, even in the light winds we had today. In between the fish, we enjoyed the stunning Florida Keys scenery, pointed out the birds and other wildlife. It was just a fun, laid-back day on the water. Today was an absolute blast out on the water with Sean. What a day we had on the Black River in Pittsburg, Coos County! The weather was absolutely perfect - just a bit of cloud cover to keep the sun from beating down too hard, and the temperature was a comfortable 46 degrees. With a light breeze and a humidity level of 76%, the conditions couldn't have been better for a day of fishing. As we set out, the river was calm and clear, giving us an ideal canvas to work with some of our favorite light tackle and fly fishing techniques. Cayden, the customer who joined me today, was clearly eager to get started. I could see the excitement in his eyes as we rigged up and got the gear ready to go. This is a special stretch of water, and we both knew we were in for something special. We started off with some fly fishing, meticulously casting our lines across the trophy section where the big brown trout and rainbow trout like to roam. The water was so still and serene, it was almost like we were fishing in a mirror. Each cast felt like it had the potential to draw a monster fish, and Cayden was laser-focused, working the river with precision. It wasn't long before he had a gorgeous rainbow trout on the line, its vivid colors shimmering in the light as he carefully brought it in. first day out this year. Water is cold, not much insect activity. subsurface on seams was most productive. fishing midges, BWO patterns when sun was up. As clouds and rains came in dark caddis patterns were the ticket.
